What version of DC are you using? Do you have 'Backup error considered a fail' turned on for the job? Is DC running from a w/s or the server? As a delayed job or check now?

If the Adagio backup fails and this option is turned on, you should receive an email. You'll also need to ensure the Company Profile settings for Email are also correct.
