Hi Tanja,
Security groups in Adagio are optional - you are not required to create security groups (as you had found in BankRec). When security groups do not exist, then all users have full access with the exception of the User/Secrity Group setup (under the File menu) where only the SYS user gets access. There is no fall-back to other programs with security, as each program has different functions to access.
Security groups in Adagio are independant between programs. You can choose to set up groups in one or more prorams but not others. Also they are independant of companies, if you maintain more than one. If you maintain multiple companies (or data backups), you can choose to allow users into Company A but not Company B, or the live data but not a backup.
When one security group is created for a company/program, then security groups must be created for all users who should be able to load the data. If the group assigned to the user has not been created, then the user cannot open the company data.
As users can only be assigned to a single security group for the entire system, you need to plan ahead as to how security levels work for your company - ie general levels like ADMIN, ENTRY etc, or each user having specific access requirements, or other possibilities. Create the groups in each program for which the users should be allowed to access. Then assign the require group to each user.
