Hi Riverworks,

Adagio (as a program) shouldn't cause any hardware problems, such as printer failures. It's only interface to printers is via the Windows Printer drivers defined on the local workstation.

If I understand the situation correctly, you are changing between 2 different printers and their cables, and at some stage of the process, an error light appears on the Samsung printer.

Here are a few things to check:
- Do you have the most up to date driver for your printer?
- Are all the settings on the printer driver accurate for what you want to print?
- Are there any print jobs waiting to be printed (ie paused or timed out) on this driver?
- Do you have Adagio configured to print to a specific printer (in the File/Options section)?

If Adagio can use the driver successfully, you should be able to Print Preview the document, whether it is a report, an invoice, a check, a statement, or whatever you want to print. If it previews OK, then the fault may lie with the printer or the connections. Adagio relies on the printer drivers in Windows to generate the documents. If the drivers are not configured correctly, then it's possible errors could occur in any Windows application, including Adagio. That being said, I would be very surprised to learn that any software, simply upon opening, would cause a hardware peripheral such a printer to fail.

Regards,
Softrak Support

Hello Riverworks,

Just a couple of questions:

Is your printer connection through a parallel or USB port? If it is through USB, what version of Windows are you using? If it is through a parallel port, is your hardware configured for bi-directional use, as most new printers expect to be able to communicate through the port with the printer driver? Have you confirmed by checking Samsung's site that you have the most recent device drivers. This is the most likely problem.

Regards

Hello,

I asked about the type of connection (USB vs Parallel) and OS because Win 95 had a lot of problems with USB devices. This doesn't appear to be the issue. Adagio does not do anything special with printers, so I'd start by pointing a fingure at the printer driver. Warren's suggestion about selecting a specific printer was to avoid an issue that we have seen where a printer's settings are changed just prior to printing from Adagio, and this may generate a problem.

Two questions out of curiousity...

  1. What was it about the Samsung printer that caused to customer to choose this (over and HP say)?
  2. Could you provide a little more identifying information than is contained in your profile regarding your company?

Many thanks

Hello Riverworks

Have you tried another PC with this printer? This may rule out the printer, if in fact it is the notebook/printer combination that is the problem - this can occur in rare cases.

Invalid page fault messages can usually be handled by removing the registry entry for the application indicated in the message. Perhaps through all the testing, something has occurred to damage the registry entry, or otherwise cause a conflict. All our 32-bit modules create entries in the Windows registry.

To edit/remove Windows registry files for Softrak 32-bit applications (in Windows 98):
1. Go to Start – Run
2. Type in C:\Windows\regedit.exe, then press OK
3. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. Open SOFTWARE
5. Open the Softrak Systems entry
a) Select the application entry that is giving you the problems
b) Delete it (it will be recreated the next time you go in to the program)

Regards

Hi again

Have just taken some time to look at this a little closer. Downloaded the Samsung ML-1210 driver from their website (Win95/98/W2K) & installed it on my PC (W2K O/S).

I setup this driver as the Windows default, with a new port added (as I do not have a printer actually attached to my LPT1 or USB).

Went into Ledger, previewed:
Company Profile
Detail Listing: OK
Trial Balance: OK

Same reports printed to my new port just fine - no errors.

Went into FR, previewed a couple of balance sheets OK and the actual printing as well had no problem completing.

I realize this is different than having the printer attached locally or on a Server, however, it does seem to eliminate a problem with this Windows driver and Adagio Ledger.

Good luck on your new testing! Please keep us up to date on your findings!

Hello Bill,

I understand your frustration. I was relieved to see that the problems were also beginning to manifest themselves in MS Word - this points strongly to either the printer driver or the specific PC (as Tech Support suggested).

While it doesn't help much in this situation, my guess is that the four hours you burned trying to make this specific combination work now exceed any saving your customer might have realized by choosing the Samsung over the HP (that's if you decide to bill them of course).

I couldn't find your contact info in our database. I wonder if you might privately e-mail it to me. Thanks again for the support.
