The margin analysis report only shows a difference if the product has a base price.

When there are price levels it gives a message unable to calculate margin.

How does this report work.

If the base price is zero, then a margin cannot be calculated. This is because a Margin is determined by subtracting the cost from the price, and then dividing the result by the base price. If the base price is zero, then the Margin calculation would require a division by zero, which is never allowed.

How do you calculate the price levels, by Markup or Percentage? If by percentage, then the same rules apply because a percentage of zero will always be zero.

If by Markup, then the numbers still may make a division by zero possible, but they may not.

In any case, currently you require a non-zero base price in order to get a Margin.

Our business environment is one in which the prices change with each shipment. Therefore we sell based on a markup on recent cost.

We do not use a base price as it would require frequent changes to the base price based on the frequent changes to our cost.

What we are trying to do is determine the markup or margin on the products. Is there any report in say sales analysis which would allow this.

Sales Analysis would be able to report on the margin of previous sales, but it would not be able to determine the margin of future sales, which is what I believe you want to determine.

The Price/Margin Analysis report really should be the report to give you what you want, and I have forwarded your scenario to development - that if an item price is determined by markup, it could report on the prices and margins (provided that the cost and calculated prices are not zero).

In the meantime, you could get this information from GridView. An inquiry could be created to do exactly what the margin Analysis report does, with 5 calculated columns (one for each of the 5 pricing levels) and 5 more formulas of [Price-Cost]/Price for each of the respective margins.

We do not had Gridview so hopefully this feature will be included in Sales Analysis.

It would be good if there was actually a feature in sales analysis to design some of the existing reports by including fields that are specific to certain business environment.

Thanks for your response

Hello CPS,

You can design your own reports in SalesAnalysis by creating a new Inquiry. Inquiries can be printed as well as displayed on the screen.
