As mentioned in today's Adagio Ledger webinar, there is a new Service Pack available for all users of Adagio Ledger V9.0A. You can find the details of all the changes by reading the release note, but here are the highlights:
  • The View Accounts grid can now be sorted in Dept/Account order as well as the standard Account/Dept sequence. Right mouse click on the Column titles to select the sequence you want.
  • There is a new Condensed option on the G/L Detail Listing which results in a printout that more closely resembles that from earlier releases.
  • The problem of the hidden "Posting complete" message has been fixed.
  • The handling of the Y/E Adjustment bucket in the financial reporter has been improved and now allows printing of a final year end Income Statement that ties to the Balance Sheet.

We strongly encourage you to download and install this Service Pack as it includes all the prior fixes to the product released in earlier months.

For those of you waiting for these fixes, we appreciate your patience.

When I installed the Service Pack today, it slowed down tremendously when it reached the sample data installation - if I let it proceed, it would have taken hours. I ended up ending the task, and immediately re-installing. It worked fine the second time, although it skipped the sample data installation. I guess it thought the files were already installed when in actuality only a few were installed before I aborted.

Tech support tells me that they confirm this and that it is an anti-virus issue, and that I should exclude the *.SAM and *.AMC files from my anti-virus checker.

I don't like this answer, for a variety of reasons, including that it involves fiddling in areas where most of my clients aren't comfortable.

I think you should either: a) strongly recommend disabling anti-virus before installing the Service Pack, b) recommend skipping the sample data install if anti-virus software is detected, or c) rework your install routine to avoid this problem, somehow.

PS - I don't know if you can change a subject, but the official date of the Service Pack is 080307.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the heads up. We don't really have much control over this, and we certainly can't disable the anti virus checkers. Insofar as your clients are not familiar with excluding a set of files, surely they are just as unfamiliar with disabling the checking entirely.

There's no specific reason to (re)install the sample data with the service pack.

I understand you don't have control over this, but you CAN put out a warning and a tech note with a workaround so that you can head off the many tech calls you will be receiving.

Hello Steve,

After testing this pretty extensively, this is what we have found:

When installing the GL 9.0A (2008.03.07) Service Pack (but not a full product or upgrade) and you are running McAfee anti-virus software, if you elect to install the sample data the install performance may become extremely slow. If this happens you will need cancel the install and temporarily disable the On-Access anti-virus scanning. Then start the install again. Remember to re-enable your anti-virus checking after the install of the sample data completes.

We have not seen the problem with AVG, so it might just be a McAfee issue.

The same delay happened with us. We have the network version of AVG AntiVirus Software.

We run Norton and I had the same issue.

As I can install any other service pack with sample data and not have a problem this issue begs the question "What has changed in the install routine that might be causing this issue?".

Hi Doug,

As far as we can determine, once you have cancelled and restart the process, the workstation "learns" something about the install and no longer hangs trying to copy the sample data. So, once you've seen the problem and cancelled, you won't see it again on that workstation. This makes testing to track down the problem very difficult.

I don't think the system "learns" something about the install.

I think that on the second pass it doesn't even bother with the sample data, because it thinks that it is already installed - see my original reply. There is no "replace sample data" prompt the second time.

Hi Steve,

If you "Cancel" the first pass, then the sample data has been deleted (or moved to the Backup) and doesn't exist for the second pass (unless you restore it). If the sample data isn't there, the service pack doesn't offer to replace it (so you don't see the problem).

However, if you restore the sample data and re-install the service pack so that it does try and replce the sample data for a second time, the "stall" doesn't occur.

Also, if you install the service pack onto a network drive where the sample data exists, cancel the process, then install the service pack onto a local drive where the sample data exists, then the slowdown doesn't repeat.

In two cases yesterday, I installed this service pack after disabling Norton on one site and AVG on the other. I did not update the sample data and in both cases, we couldn't open the Financial Reporter. Message said it couldn't open the FR. In both cases, I had to download the most recent full product, in which case the install process said it was not the correct update and had to enter a previous S/N and Install Code. After the install was completed, everything worked fine. Something very strange about the service pack.

Hello Lars,

We need a little more information. We have had some problem reports where the install was not complete. This means that the new programs are not installed or that they are not named correctly after the install.

After the install of the Service Pack, the Financial Report should be:
Named: LedgerFinRep.exe
Dated: 3/4/2008

Check the File Properties, on the Version page, the File version should show: 2.1.1.1497

OK, so it just happened to another client who did the installation themselves - failed to open the FR. Going to the Softrak\Ledger folder, there is no LedgerFinRep.exe. It seems that when they aborted the installation, it removed the previous file and now there is no FR exe file. My plan is to reinstall the full product (V9.0).

BTW - I tried to duplicate this problem by installing the SP on our system and didn't get any problem.

To update everyone,

Please re-download the Ledger Service Pack. This build does not appear to have any problem installing (or not) the sample data, or "stalling" duing the installation process.

Hi guys ..... my install also "hung" during the first SP try on the sample data .... a second install attempt the next day worked fine .... I think we're running the Windows Defender anti-virus. Also, I had to go in and rename the LedgerFinRep.exe file , as per the last couple Service Packs. Great to have that posting window issue solved! Keep up the great support and keep on listening to us users!!

Hi Andrew

I have a client that is reporting what Lars reported - FR hangs on the words "Loading Account Group", although the grid is there.

I tried a full install, using the AL8P20080307.EXE, no luck. I then tried downloading and installing the build you just posted, no luck.

What should I do with this client?
