Is it possible that the Edit Account window is actually opening but off screen? The position is remembered in the Windows Registry, and perhaps this is on a different area. This could happen for example if you previously had multiple monitors and now you have one.
When you edit an account, if this was the situation, you could press the Escape key on the keyboard to close that window, and the program would no longer be 'frozen'.
The solution would be to reset the window positions, either by opening File / User Preferences and removing the selection for Remember Window Position. Or from the Window menu, choose Original Sizes - which also affects the positions.
I suspect that editing an account or customer is not actually freezing the program, but rather the window is simply opening off-screen.
