When I try the ExcelDirect button to print the Ledger to excel I get an error message "Maximum index length of 76 for ExcelDirect exceeded. Try a different sort order (exclude Description). I tried moving the database to a location where the exported file would have a shorter string of directories / subdirectories, and I tried just exporting a couple of accounts. I still get the same error message. How can I get the G/L to go to ExcelDirect?

If you want to export the Detail Listing report from Ledger to Excel, the Description field cannot be part of the sort, because that makes the index too long. Thus the reason for the error about excluding the Description. It doesn't have to do with the location of the data and the length of the directory names.

The solution is to change the Description in the sort to Reference.

I have it sorted by 1. Source code 2. Date and 3. Reference. I'm not using Description in the sorting.

I tried with Reference as the primary sort (so 1. Reference 2. Date 3. Source Code) and now it exports to excel. Thanks
