Good Afternoon

I'm having a little problem with summery filters. I've a two view workspace, one that lists items and the other display sales quantities. The Month-Year column is a calculated column which is sorted and summarized. This gives me the sales totals by month as well as total sales (I have a query date filter set up so I can select various date ranges). What I would also like to see is the average sales per month (411/12). However anything I've tried is not working. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Can you Zip and email me the Workspace?

Hi Andrew,

Had a bunch of last minute calls before leaving so I'll try and get it to you some time this weekend.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

This isn't forgotten, but the Workspace is complex because:
  • You may not have any sales in a specific month, so there's no row for that month.
  • You cannot perform a different operation on a total row from the detail rows. (In your case, you are trying to divide the total by 12 when none of the row results are divided by 12.) Crystal Reports for Adagio can do this kind of calculation.

However, I enjoy a challenge, so I'm tinkering around to see if there's an alternative way of presenting the information you want.

Hi Andrew,

From the manual:

"Any amount or date field can be summarized. The type of summarization (total, min, max, average) is controlled by the attributes set for the column (eg. right click column heading's context menu). Date columns only support Min and Max processing."

Rather than seeing the total, there are a number of times I would prefer to see the average. I suspect that what I'm trying to do isn't really a summarized filter as described in the manual. Is there an example of a summarized filter in the sample data? I didn't really find the sample/explanation given in the help very clear. And don't knock yourself out. Not too difficult to divide by 12 in your head.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

Right, but you want to Total the details to get the total sales for the month, but in the "Total Cell" in the View you don't want to just see the Total of the 12 months, you then want to divide the amount by 12 (which you aren't doing to the details). Is that clearer?

Anyway, it's an interesting challenge and might make a good use study for the GridView Workshop Pre-Conference training at the Adagio Opportunity Conference

Hi Mike,

Here's a link to the Release Video for GridView 9.0E, which was from about 2 years ago. The first topic describes Summary Filters.

A typical usage of Summary Filters would be to sort or select by subtotal groupings, such as the top 5 Salespersons this year based on summarized Sales Analysis transactions, or all Salespersons with total YTD sales exceeding 50,000. It's more than just performing an alternate summary operation on a numeric column.

Perhaps check the 'Customers with Transactions' workspace. My sample has a couple of summary filters in the Customer List view, though I can't be certain if I have edited the view since it was installed.
