A client is about to buy a new server and wants to make sure it will work with Adagio. Can anyone confirm that Small Business Server(SBS) 2012 Essentials will work? It is built on Server 2008 R2.

No. All small business servers come bundled with additional software that can't be unbundled (un-installed). This results in a significant overhead on the server (because you are running things like Exchange Server even if you are not using it) that consume the hardware resources resulting in a poor performing Adagio.

Actually Windows Server 2012 Essentials would be a good server to use for line-of-business applications. It is basically Windows Server 2012 with added remote access and backup features. It does not have Exchange.
