Our accounting department still has a couple win2k dinos and I am planning on replacing those in the next few weeks with some xp boxes. I am asking questions in anticipation of the upgrades. Since we are running a server setup do I simply do the following:

a) backup all server data
b) put new workstation in place and ensure all drives mount the same as on the old machine
c) run the allwkst.exe on the workstation

Is that it? Is there nothing held locally on the workstation? (obviously I'm not going to toss the old workstation before I get the new ones up and running for a week or two)

d) Access each module in turn and set File|Options as required.
e) Any customized grids will need to be recreated.

Allwkst.exe does not always do all modules. Watch out for the ones that indicate to install from the main module.

You should also check for customized desktop short cuts and transfer those as well.

Make sure the XP's are XP Pro's.

They are xp pro boxes. I wouldn't use anything else.
The customized grids are not held locally on the workstation anywhere where we can just copy them over manually to the new one?

The custom grid settings are stored in the users registry. I'm not sure just how partable they are, particularly when switching from one operating system to another.

I have used the following method to save the grid settings and it has always worked although the number of modules on our network is probably fewer than most. On the old workstation, be sure that all the modules are running on the same versions as the server. Set a "restore point" on the new workstation in the event there is a problem. Then copy the entire c:\softrak directory from the old workstation to the same location on the new workstation c: drive. Next run allwkst.exe from the new workstation to install Adagio. Check to see that everything is working properly on the new workstation. If not, use system restore to return the new workstation to its previous state and go back to the drawing board.

This method was recently used to change a workstation from a 32 bit version of XP to a 64 bit version of Windows 7 without a hiccup. However, wait for a comment from Technical Support before proceeding.
