I just dod a system cheque run and the cheques aren't what I expected.

On the cheque amount (text) line, on some cheques, there are leading and trailing asteriks and on others, there are only leading asteriks.There doesn't seem to be a pattern.

I would like leading and trailing asteriks on all cheques.

In checks printed by Adagio asterisks will fill the text (amount) field when the words do not require the full length of the field. That is - whether (and how many) asterisks print on the line depends on how long the text field is and on the length of the words specifying the text amount.

For this reason it is difficult to plan the check spec so that you will always have leading and trailing asterisks on the check (since the length of the text will vary depending on the dollar amount).

I realize that but on one cheque I will get several asteriks, the text, then more asteriks.

Then, on the next cheque, SAME RUN, fewer letters in the text, I will get only leading asteriks. The text will be positioned so that trailing asteriks should show up and they don't.

It looks terrible. How do I fix it?

OK, you shouldn't be seeing behaviour such as this. What are the two amounts of the cheques (the one with the asterisks and the one without), and what version and release of Payables are your running (check Help | About in the program)?

A cheque for 421.47 printed leading asteriks, no trailing asterisks.

A cheque for 2,798.64 printed with leading and trailing asterisks.

In my setup, I have:
Line one: A02 string options length 70 max 120 offset 0
Line two: A02 string options length 100 max 120
offset 0

(The 120 is greyed in.)

If the properties of the A02 field are set with ?Auto size field? off, make sure that the field is wide enough to print all of the characters.

One final question, does your reference to the "autosize" mean that it's safer to have the "autosize" turned "on"?

I would not say that it is safer. It really depends on the location of the specification code.

If the Auto size is on, Payables will size the field automatically for you, according to its length and the font you have selected. If you have another field printing too close to the Auto sized field, it may be overwritten.
