Hello,

I have a problem with my quik report. The problem is when i want to print the report to the printer it will slow down the printing process. The sorting process is okay but when they show you the result of your report it will show you page by page instead of the whole page of the report, and if you press escape the printing will stop at the pages they already show to you instead of the pages.

Is there any solution so that i can make it faster.?

Hi Zarish,

Does the problem have to do with actually sending the print job to the printer, or is it simply in the process of compiling the data? The way to determine this is instead of having the System Manager print to a printer, have it print to a file and/or to the screen. This takes the printer and connections out of the equation.

Should this speed up the process, that means that there are some printer settings or connections that are not set up just right, and Quik Reports is not part of the problem. I'm not a printer expert, but there are some settings for the printer such as Time Outs, or perhaps a faulty cable.

If this doesn't help the speed, that means that something within the report or the system is slowing things down. Make sure that you have as much free conventional memory as possible on each workstation; 530K minimum and more for complicated reports. You may also have to edit the links of the report if it contains information from many diferent programs.

Pressing escape is a feature to simply show information that has already been compiled, so you don't have to wait until the report is completed to see if it's working. This is usually helpful mostly when reports are being written.

Hello,

I've already set the printing properties as you suggest but it did'nt cahange anything.

In the earlier message you mention that "Something within the report os system is slowing things down" Could you give an example on that?

How do i know that i have enough convetional memory in my workstation?

You also suggest that i have to do some editing on the links of the report. Can you explain a little more because i really do not know how to do it...:-).

thank you very much.

Hi Zarish,

To check the amount of conventional memory that is available on your workstation, go to a DOS prompt and type 'mem', and that will display the information about the memory on that machine. I can't advise how to create more memory, but I noticed that there was some information on the posting on PlusCommunity.com about this. As I said before, you need a minimum of 530K for the simplest of report, and up to 590K for very complex reports with lots of formulas and other fields.

As for links in your report, it all depends on which files are in your report. If you open your report in Quik Reports, then go to Edit Links and select Driver, which files are listed, and which one has an arrow next it? This would determine the main file that the report is based on. To make the report run as fast as possible, the most detailed file must be selected as the driver, such as OELINE or ARTRANS. The driving file determines the purpose of the report, so if it's purpose means that another file should be used, you may have to live with the slow compiling.

Also check the link mode, which should be one-to-one in about 98% of the reports. Lastly, large data sets will force reports to take longer to compile.

If you can print to the screen is less time than it takes to print to the printer, that means that something with the network setup is incorrect as far as feeding information to the printer, or another symptom similar to that. Should this be the case, I won't be able to advise how to fix this.
