Users of Adagio DataCare and BankRec may get errors when attempting to use the Help file because these applications use Compiled (CHM) help format, and a Windows security patch affects loading CHM files from a network drive. Loading locally stored CHM files works OK, and one solution is to copy CHM help files to a local workstation.

There are a couple knowledge base articles on the Microsoft site that can be used to create exclusions and allow access of CHM help files from a network:
Knowledge base KB892675
Knowledge base KB896054

There may be other knowledge base articles pertinent to the scenario.

Once the CHM help file has been moved locally is there then a way to get Adagio F1 and/or Help buttons to launch this copy of the help file?

Hi Doug,

Rename or move the CHM file stored locally. When you then use Help from the application, it won't be able to find it - then you can browse and reset the help file location.

Hi Softrak Support,

That method is not working for me. When I move the file, for example BRwin.CHM, BR gives an error message on launching the program "Help file not found..." Choosing [OK] is the only option which simply completes the launch and gives the "Open ... Data" window. Once inside the module, choosing help (by any method) does nothing.

I'm not getting a browse window allowing me to locate the file via the local drive.

Regards, Pete

I also could not get this to work. My results were the same as Peter's.

OK, that's what we get for trying to be helpful...

Here's the 'specific' information that worked for one particular person - hope this is more helpful than the links. Not guaranteeing this will work as other security settings may be in place - just passing on information...

Code:

Add the following key to the Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions
Add the following value:
"MaxAllowedZone"=dword:00000001

Make sure that there are no spaces in the key or value - this will prevent things happening.

Thanks Guys,

That one works for me :-)

Doesn't hurt to Backup your registry before the changes though.

Hi Guys,

Anything new on this ?

The fix above has stopped working again even though the Registry setting is still there.

Hi Pete,

What changed? This is a Microsoft thing, not something that Softrak created to allow CHM file access. Perhaps you could google 'CHM help network' and see the hits pour in!

Also make sure you do not remove the CHM help file from the network, even though it won't ultimately be used. Otherwise Adagio won't launch the help system. So leave BRwin.CHM on the network and also the alternate local location where it ultimately will be loaded from.

Hi Softrak,

My XP SP2 PC is set to download and install Microsoft Updates automatically so only the great one above knows what may have changed.

The setting above that worked before, did so with the CHM file on the network drive only. Now that setting nor others that I have tried from the Microsoft links above work.

One thing that I'm still not understanding from your post is when you say "leave BRwin.CHM on the network and also the alternate local location where it will ultimately be run from".

How does one get Adagio to stop using the network reference and tell it to use the local copy of the file if we're not to move or rename it? Adagio needs it there on opening and I can't find a way to get Adagio to allow me to show it a new path to the file.

BTW - Didn't I hear something mentioned about the new 8.1 versions having to change the from the .HLP system which was no longer supported in Vista ? If so, I assume that you guys must have found a method that now works on network drives correct ?

Regards, Pete
