Hi Steve,
I've run into this before, needing to change the reference or date field and reported it to Support. It is apparently not a bug, you can only edit retrieved details on payroll batches, not for batches from AR or AP.
Dan is correct with the work around, unless you want to import the details as a payment batch with the correct check numbers.
Hopefully the next update of BankRec will include the ability to export batches, which would make fixing this problem very simple.
