We recently updated all of our Adagio systems to the current versions. We have 3 companies that we manage separately. We extract data nightly from the 3 companies via ODBC and SQL in order to combine various information needed to make wise business decisions.

We found that there were some Table/Field changes that broke many ODBC SQL queries. The details of these changes were not documented anywhere that we could find. The full details of the changes I found (so far) are detailed in my attached PDF. (it is in a Zip archive as this forum does not accept PDF files.)

Questions:
1) Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

2) Why can’t we be told of these details ahead of time?

Thanks in advance for your responses.
Sincerely,
Gregg Holbert, CPA

Hello Gregg,

The Release Note contains this section:
Quote:
Installing the Upgrade

The data structure was changed and expanded significantly for the OrderEntry 9.3A release.
The internal database version changed for 9.3A. Programs from Adagio Developer
Partners (ADPs) that read or write the OrderEntry data will require a compatibility
upgrade. Check with the developer or your Adagio dealer to ensure an upgrade is available
before installing or upgrading to OrderEntry 9.3A.

This is almost always an indication that database tables have changed. We have some tools for our Developer Partners to help them identify what has been changed, but they are sketchily documented and are not designed (or tested) for general release.

I cannot possibly imagine who would have suggested to you that there were no database changes in this Upgrade. We had been warning our Resellers (and all sites who attended any of our events) that the OE 9.3A Upgrade would require significant attention to existing GridView Workspaces and Crystal Reports.

I have asked what we might be able to make available for you.

Unfortunately, we do not know what versions Upgrades are starting from, so we would only be able to publish what changes had been made from the immediately preceding version.

Andrew,

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. Yes - I agree with your statement, "we would only be able to publish what changes had been made from the immediately preceding version." That would be very helpful. That way we could review the documentation for each version release and combine those changes into one list. This would be much more efficient and empower resellers and end users. Otherwise we are all on our own to independently discover those on our own. Thank you for your consideration!

Hello Gregg,

I'm assuming you are aware that the DataDictionaryExporter that is installed with ODBC and GridView is capable of sending an Adagio Dictionary to an Excel Workbook with the ODBC File and Field names. The command would be similar to:
Code:
C:\SOFTRAK\system\DataDictionaryExporter.exe /odbc

There is a builtin function in newer versions of Excel that compares two workbooks for differences.

Yes - I am aware of that tool. Unfortunately there are (as you know) literally hundreds of potential tables that could have changed. This would take days for one person to do - and right now all of us would have to do that analysis for every version change. I would request that the developers document the Table/Field changes for each version. They are the ones making these changes and it should be easiest for them to document these changes. I am a software developer as well.I would hear that as a reasonable request.

Please,

Gregg Holbert, CPA

Hello Gregg,

Why are you concerned about tables you don't use? You only need to check the tables your application is using, whereas you are requesting we document all changes to all the tables. That's a significant documentation burden.
