Is there a way to pop up a warning such as "Please insert check stock" or "Please check your toner" prior to doing a check run.

A client is being forced by their bank to use Magnetic toner, and they are afraid they might forget to insert it.

Hi Steve,

Since most people can deposit a check into their bank account by taking a picture of it with their smart phone, perhaps your client should go back to their bank and ask how the smart phone knows whether the pictured check was printed with or without magnetic ink.

If the bank is having trouble reading the MICR line, then it's more likely because the font is not being rendered properly by their printer. We ship with several different weights of the MICR font. Perhaps they can try a couple of different ones and see which the bank has the easiest time processing.

You answered a question I am not asking. It's a given that the bank requires magnetic toner. That battle has been fought and lost.

Hi Steve,

At the risk of being obtuse, wouldn't it be more practical for them to purchase a small printer just for cheques, setting the workstation option for cheque printing and having the toner in it permanently?

Of course that's an option. However, I want to present them with all options, including ones that don't involve spending money.

But since the answer to my question appears to be no, then I know how to proceed.

My answer is the same as Dan's. We have been recommending this solution to our clients ever since laser printers were available for under a $1,000. Now at under $300; why would you not have a dedicated check printer?

I don't think the US has universally adopted the deposit check by taking a picture of it process we have here in Canada.

Most banks in the US do allow mobile check deposit - We do have technology here, you know.
I have never had a client purchase a magnetic ink toner cartridge and I have never, not once, had a client have a check sent back from their bank because it wasn't mag ink. Banks use OCR for like the last 10 years,
The Brother HL-L2300D laser which I like to use for a check printer is $79.99 on Amazon (but probably unlikely that there is a Mag Ink toner cartridge available for it).

My client has read this thread and is buying a dedicated printer.

I agree with everything said about not needing magnetic ink toner, including Howard's comment that not once has a client complained about a bank rejecting a check for lack of magnetic ink. But we all pick our fights, and some battles are not worth fighting even if you are right.
