I'm trying to change my category codes for inventory items from one category to the another. I thought toolkit would work best since i have several thousand inventory items to change and made an import file and I'd like this month's history to show under the right category code. However, when I try to use toolkit it states i have to have a different source code or in other words my inventory codes can't be the same one. (for example, i can't say combine, change or copy 20widgets category 02 to 20widgets category 20)

I'm assuming i can change it in the inventory module but i want the history to show under the right category.

Any suggestions would be appreciate to easily accomplish my task.
thanks
Treasure

I don't know where you are going in Toolkit, but when I select Edit | Inventory | Category Changes, I don't see any mention of item numbers.

Same result for importing using File | Import | Inventory | Category Changes.

Try using one of those functions. I don't think you'll need the import, since you are only changing one category.

A warning that it will change ALL items and all transactions assigned to that category, so if you only want to change selected items, Toolkit is not the way to do it.

If you are not changing the category from one name to a new one, and what you want to do is to change some items to a different category, you should try this on test data first. Using the Toolkit Item change feature, change the items you want to change category to by adding a character either at the beginning or the end of the item number and change the category at the same time. Then, change the item number back to their original number.

Thank you Steve but i'm not changing my categories, just moving my inventory to another category.

Thank you Patricia. I think that is the solution. I'll have to change the items to make this work then change them back.

Not sure If Bob from Toolkit is around. Maybe he can respond if this is the only way to make this work.
thanks again

If I understand you correctly, you're trying to change the assigned category for a bunch of items. An item import is your best approach. You can change a category when you change an item from A to B, but that's not your scenario. You're not changing items. If you were changing a category from A to B (for all items), there's a function for that.

Hi Bob

That won't work because she wants to change the categories in already posted transactions. That's why Patricia's suggestion is the best approach.

Thanks for your help. yes I wanted to change the Category of specific inventory codes and the history of this years sales. After a little thought on this and because December is our first month so i needed this done by month end. I really didn't want to mess with changing the item codes of my inventory and then having to change it back.

I took the safe approach and decided to do the category change instead of inventory change in toolkit.
I combined the old cat. codes of the inventory i had the highest sales and items count to the code i needed it moved into..
i then went back and changed all the inventory items to the correct category codes that didn't belong under this new category. This ended up not being too bad since i was still able to move most of my inventory to the right categories. My sales history will be a little off because of the sales of the items that didn't belong in the new Category but it wasn't all that significant and I'm happy with the result and was able to removed my unwanted codes at the same time.

It might be nice if toolkit had this option down the road to make this type of change where we can just import a bunch of inventory item codes and change the item category of just these specific inventory items and be able to move the sale history also. i know i'm asking for a lot lol. I will probably never do this again but others might.
Thank all
regards
Treasure
