Trying to file:export:transactions and I get
Error Code: 1501 on ToXLSaveWorkbook
The work around is exporting as a .csv, but it'd be better if it just worked... any thoughts?

What program and version are you using, and what function are you doing to get this error?

In the August 10, 2016 service pack for Adagio Ledger 9.2B, this particular error was identified and fixed. This is from the release notes:

In Ledger 9.2B, the Export Account Budgets and Export Reallocations functions displayed the error “Error code: 1501 on ToXLSaveWorkbook” if you exported to .xls format instead of .xlsx.

If you are getting this error from Ledger 9.2B, the solution is to install the service pack.

Running Ledger 9.2B so I'm pretty sure I'm as up to date as I can be... that said, I forced the save path to end in .XLSX instead of .XLS and that corrected it. Thanks for the tip!
