Just noticed that we posted an invoice number twice. Different customers, but the same invoice number was posted. Have I forgotten to check something in my profile that would alert me to the duplication? Or perhaps a way to insure that duplicating the numbers cannot happen- even for different customers? Would certainly simplify things for us.

Hi Karen,

There is an option in the Company Profile to automatically incremement invoice numbers. So unless the invoice number is edited on the invoice (or the company profile value is decremented), this will ensure unique numbers.

Technically, it is not an error to post the same document number to different customers (which is why we don't prevent or warn in this scenario), but can understand why you wouldn't want that. Thus the increment option.

Posting does check for duplicate document numbers for the same customer and prevents it. I believe the batch listing report also looks for this.

As an aside to this, where is the checking being done? I've tried deleting an invoice from history in an effort to recreate an invoice with the same number/customer, is it looking at AR and if so, Current, Historical or both?

I know what you're going to ask - don't...

It checks AR Current and Historical, and I think it checks AR Matching too (but am not 100% sure of this last one). It doesn't look at IN History.
