Client exported budget numbers to Excel for all departments using a Financial Statement export.
Changes were made to budget numbers.
We then saved each departmental report with a new name.
We created a macro to change formulas to values,
strip out the header rows and subtotal rows,
delete the extra columns,
change format of dollars to numbers with 2 decimal places,
and change the account code figures from [50000-`] to [50000].

The resulting excel spreadsheet has columns for account code and each of 12 periods.

When importing, we are defaulting department to the correct 3 character code and defaulting type to ?Income Statement?
Result is ?File layout is incorrect. Import is cancelled.?

Can you advise what might be the problem with the layout?

Hello Kate Spontak,

Email me the dataset and spreadsheet you are trying to import (or at least the spreadsheet).

Do you have a header row on the spreadsheet? Are columns "A" and "B" hidden? (They will be if it was a SmartSheet to start.) Any other hidden columns? Does the imp[ort fail right away, or does it get part way through the import?

sent files via email

No header row. Columns A & B were hidden but have been unhidden and deleted.

Import fails immediately repeating the error message twice.

Norm suggested saving as a csv file and that works. Maybe the Excel version is formatting the numbers and making them the "wrong" format.

Hello Kate Spontak,

In the spreadsheet, column "A", the account number, is ambiguous to Excel - it sees it as a "number", not a string as the import template requires.

Saving as a CSV removes the ambiguity.
