IC Item Start Date

Would it be possible to add a "Start Date" for IC Items in the same way as Customers and Vendors shows us the start date? We have a terrible time differentiating between new item codes that have no activity and item codes that are several years old and have had no activity for a few years. In order to maintain our inventory database we need to merge our old item codes in to an item code we call ZZ OBSOLETE and make room for new item codes at least a couple of times per year. Having a Start date for the item codes would save us many hours of manually trying to make this determination and greatly reduce the potential for accidentally removing new item codes.
Also, it would be fantastic if IC Item Inquiry had an Edit button in the same way as you can view a Customer in AR and then click on Edit when you want to make changes. IC is so much more time consuming since you have to see the details in Item Inquiry and then open Item Edit to make changes and switch back and forth.

Hi Steve,
I added an optional date field called "Start Date" which will work going forward from today if everyone remembers to put the date in. We use the Sale end date occasionally when we have limited time offers.

My I/C optional date and amount fields don't show up in File/Optional Fields.
Wouldn't it be the best if you could make all the fields you want mandatory or not in I/C, A/R and A/P when setting up new items, customers and vendors?!

Hi Susan, You should be using GridView to determine which old items should be made obsolete. While I agree it would be useful to have a "Start date" for an item, you can use the "Last ship date" and "Last receipt date" fields, along with the Quantities shipped This year and last year to determine whether an item has not been received or sold for a while. A new item will have no receipt or shipment date on file.
AND(
{Qty on Hand 1} = 0,
OR(
{Last Rcpt Date} <= DATE(1980,01,01),
{Last Shipment Date} <= DATE(1980,01,01)
)
)

We have hundreds of items that have no receipt date and no ship date that are dead stock. For example WP LVB12SINGLE. 7 were adjusted in when we counted inventory in 2007. No activity since.
We can't assume that no receipt date and no ship date means it's a new item code. A "start date" would help us identify dead stock easier as well as identify old item codes with zero quantities.
We have a start date in AP but IC is way more challenging since we're working with 6500 Item Codes compared to 600 Vendors.
