A relatively new feature in Ledger is the ability to import GL reallocations. Thank you for that feature!

A client created an import file and tried to import it, but got lots of error messages indicating that the total of the reallocations did not add up to 100%. However, they did add up.

It turns out that once we re-sorted the import file to be sorted by account/department, the import succeeded.

I wish the import function would test for 100% compliance no matter in what order the records are listed. Alternatively, there should at least be a warning in a prominent place that the import file must group together the reallocations for an account/department, or else the import will fail.

Of course all the reallocations for an account must be grouped together. How else can the program check that they add up 100%?

That sounds obvious to you but not to the average user, and honestly it doesn't even occur to me sometimes when I'm troubleshooting.

A warning would be great - for example when importing rather than just saying "Reallocation details for account xxxx/yyyy do not add up to 100%", you should add a line under that which says "Make sure the import file is sorted by account/department" or something to that effect.

And while I'm on the subject of reallocations, it certainly would be nice if there were a way to mass delete existing reallocations (other than using GridView RW). Does this happen automatically when you uncheck the Reallocate box under account maintenance? I can imagine a scenario where previously account 6000/1000 was reallocated 50% to 6000/1001 and 50% to 6000/1002 and now it's allocated 50% to 6000/1003 and 50% to 6000/1004. How will the import handle that?

When you enter reallocations for an account, you cannot leave the reallocation screen until they add up to 100%. When reallocations are being imported, the same edits must be performed.

Importing a reallocation for an account clears all the previous reallocation information for the account.

Reallocations are processed by creating a batch for accounts marked as requiring reallocations. If this flag is not checked in the account record, no reallocation batch will be created, regardless of whether or not reallocation records exist in the file.

Definitely detected a note of some surprise in Andrew is correct!

I think that you'll find that all importing in Adagio that requires multiple records to be grouped together (Ledger batches so that entries have balanced debits/credits, other batches with multiple distributions or details on a document, Inventory BOMs, etc) require all records within a grouping to be sorted together. It makes the verification process that much easier.

I'm OK with an explanation in online Help - not only about the need for correct grouping, but also that importing a reallocation for an account clears all the previous reallocation information for the account.
