Good morning,
Here's a weird one to start my Wednesday. I was online with a client installing the AP 8.1D upgrade and the latest AR Service Pack.

Their Adagio is installed at s:\Softrak

When I tried to install AP, I got an error message that said "S:\softrak\apwin is not write enabled"

I checked the properties and made sure it was NOT read only
I created a text document in s:\softrak\apwin - and deleted it successfully

I tried again to no avail.

Then, I tried to install AR SP and got the message saying that Adagio AR is not installed in s:\softrak\receivables.

I checked the shortcut and IT IS.

This is NOT a new install and my procedures for these updates are just like they've been for as long as they've had the program.

I've contacted the guy who handles the IT stuff and asked if there were any changes, waiting to hear back from him, though she was unaware of any changes.

Any ideas? ? ? ?

Thanks,
Carol

If you haven't solve this issue already. Try rebooting the workstation. Some "weird" things disappear after rebooting. If it is Windows 7 or Vista, remove the User Account Control Settings. It makes some drive mapping not to show when installing. The other reason may be that the user actually doesnt have rights to delete or move files in the APWIN and/or Receivables folder. You may be able to create or modify but not delete.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Patricia -- I had NOT actually solved the issue -- I was able to create AND delete a text file in the APWIN folder, so I think her permissions were ok. I'll mess with the UAC and let you know how it goes.

Say hello to your new employee Wally Kunz!

Thanks again,
Carol

Hi Patricia (and everyone else who might have an idea here!)
No joy. I logged into her PC this morning and her UAC is set to off. She shuts down every night, so she has been rebooted. Still got the same message. ???

I am going to try while she's logged into the network as Administrator. Though, as I said earlier, I am able to create, modify, and then delete a text file in the APWIN folder.

FRUSTRATING!

Thanks,
Carol

Hi Carol and corgis:
What's the server operating system? Not a version of Linux is it? I see more security-related issues as WIN7 becomes more common-place. Your idea of logging in with the highest possible set of rights is the logical next step.

Hi Carol,

An ancient issue with Novell networks would give a message that X:\softrak\apwin\apwin.ini is not write enabled if the most current Novell client service pack was not installed. A slightly different message that what you posted, but if your client is using a Novell network (goodness, I hope not) then try ensuring that Novell is up to date, and that the Novell client is set without 'File Caching' or 'File Commit'.

Carol:

Create and Delete are difference rights from Write (modify). When installing an upgrade you need Write rights to the folder. Try checking the folder security and make sure the user has Full Control.

Hello all,
No, thank goodness they are NOT using Novell. Lord have mercy!

I'm guessing someone has messed with rights and I'll have to chase down who can fix. Pain in the neck.

Thanks for the replies,
Carol
