Some of my customers can not open the statement when it is e-mailed and with others there is no attachment. Why is that?

Is the email method mapi or direct? Do they see a winmail.dat attachment instead? If that's the case it could be due to emails being sent in Rich Text Format (RTF) instead of as plain text or HTML. You can change this setting under the 'Mail' section of Outlook 2010's options.
