In the 15 years this Forum has been in operation, I don't believe we have ever deleted a post that wasn't spam.

Hi Yann

I cannot believe your consultant would have told you to ask Softrak because he did not have all the answers.

If an Adagio consultant doesn't know the answer, he/she asks Softrak and then gets back to you. That is the first rule of consulting.

Steve

Yann:
Information must have value. Otherwise lawyers, doctors, accountants, professors, psychics and even IT professionals would no longer exist in our society. I'm sure you agree with that.

So the issue under debate is the value of the information that you require. You place a low value on it because you already know most of the answers and feel that the Forum can provide the rest. Doug places a higher value on it because he works hard to acquire that experience and takes responsibility for his advice.

I can assure you that Doug knows the answers to those questions and much more besides. I know from experience that Doug takes his role very seriously, cares for the the quality of the recommendations he gives his clients and has an extrememtly successful practice. I deliberately used the word "recommendations" because Doug provides more than "put the CD in the drive" directions; he provides advice on how to best employ Adagio.

Would you be able to speak with Doug and find a price that suits both of you? If not, then you should talk to other Adagio consultants in your area. Sorry Doug! Look for someone who has a price that matches the cost you are willing to pay. However you will find that there's no Mother Teresa of the Adagio world! There will always be a cost. And any of those prospective Adagio consultants would be well advised to review this thread.

Opportunistic Locking is a Microsoft setting that controls access to files on a server over a network. It is not "On" or "Off", it is "Enabled" or "Disabled". There is a setting in the computer Registry that controls whether this setting is Enabled or Disabled. In currently supported environments (Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP1, Server 2003, Server 2008 R2) this setting may be either Enabled or Disabled. The behaviour of this setting has changed over the last few years, and where Adagio used to require that Opportunistic Locking be Disabled to ensure the integrity of the database, this is no longer the case. We are in the process of removing the checking of this setting from the Adagio modules, but this is time consuming and will not be completed for a few more months. There is a very specific circumstance in the usage of Adagio GridView where this setting must be Enabled in order to ensure consistent result sets being returned. You change the setting of this option by changing the registry entry as documented by Microsoft. Please contact them for a full discussion of how this setting changes the behaviour of their software.

SMB1 and SMB2 are network communication protocols used by Microsoft. SMB2 is higher performance, but only completely supported in pure Server 2008 R2 / Windows 7/Vista environments. If you have any other configuration, SMB1 must be chosen.

SetServerForAdagio.EXE displays and allows changes to the registry settings that control Opportunistic Locking, SMB1/SMB2 choices and another setting that fixes a Microsoft bug in the date stamping of files installed to a server from the server where the mapped drive exists on the server itself (a configuration that sometimes occurs when installing Adagio remotely). That is all it does. The program displays all this before making any changes. Older versions of this program suggest disabling Opportunistic Locking, but a newer version is being prepared that is editorially neutral and allows both enabling and disabling the setting is being prepared for general release.

I'm sorry but this is not a place to ask questions when you are in the middle of an install and/or server migration if your requirement for the answers is time dependent.

Thanks to everyone who has chimed into this thread.

At the end of the day, between my current Adagio consultant, this Forum and my best friend, GOOGLE, I have completed a successful migration of my Adagio software from one server to another.

The discussion might have gotten a little heated at time but the final result is what I think counts here. Adagio has enlighten all of us on a couple of points and might decide to prepare a "BEST PRACTICES" manual for migrating an install to a new server.

This was certainly not rocket science but should be discussed thoroughly with your consultant before attempting to do it yourself.

Thanks again to everyone, especially, my adagio consultant who empowered me to do it myself.

Yann
