I've got a client who needs to split up their cost types for selected categories in JC.
Currently they have only one cost type "SHW" which is set to the "material" classification. They would like to be able to break out their labour and material classifications on selected reports.
It is not possible to change the cost type on an active category but it is possible to change it by doing an export/import of that category. After exporting the desired category and importing it with the desired cost type I ran a Data check.
As expected, the DIC returned errors for each job with that category. The rebuild was successful and it corrected all of those errors.
In order to verify my changes I ran the "job status report" and the appropriate category is now listed correctly as "labour" at the bottom of the report.
Everything looks ok (this is on a copy of the clients data - not live) and I am wondering if there are any repercussions that I am not thinking about? Is it ok to make this type of change?

Thanks

Hi, Kevin,

If you are importing any fields that are not otherwise editable in a module, eg. JobCost, you will want to be very careful doing so. Make sure you have a backup. Make sure integrity is clean after doing the import. Run more than one type of report and ensure things are being reported correctly. Recognize Revenue and ensure this is running correctly.

You will need to ensure that all is as it should be after doing such an import.

Hi Kevin,
Your process is correct. You should be fine. The key is to run the DIC and rebuild after, and balance your reports as you have done for the costs.
Alternatively, you could have used the GV RW to revise, but the import is cleaner and is the quicker route. With GV RW you would still have to do the DIC.
If you are unsure of the impact, we would also suggest that you do a GV of the affected files and compare with your expected results after the import and DIC.
When you go to do live, make sure you have retrieved and posted all cost batches from AP or POA, or Payroll before doing the import, to ensure you have a clean cutoff.
Best,
Brian
