GL v9.0a sometimes hangs computer

Various times since installing the gl version 9.0a, my whole computer freezes up while in Adagio GL, but only occasionally. The mouse won't move and the clock stops. Ctrl Alt Del doesn't work. I didn't notice any issues after rebooting until recently, for the second time now it has frozen while in a batch and when I go back into the batch some lines are missing, but the totals include the amounts that were on those lines. I have fixed that problem before using Data Integrity Check and Rebuild. But what concerns me is why it is freezing and I'm losing part of my entry - the last one I was saving after adding 6 lines and I lost over 100 lines of the entry.

Barb, At the risk of sounding like the "software guy" always blaming problems on the hardware, may I add a couple of comments. 1. Are you running on a network? LAN problems can certainly cause data loss and other problems. Have your technician check that "opportunistic locking is turned off on the server. (He or she will know what that is ) 2. If the computer's clock stops, that would seem to indicate more than a problem with one piece of software. Run the usual anti-virus checks and perhaps check the hardware as well.

9.0A(080704)
It has occasionally hung since I installed version 9 which would have included other versions. I am certainly suspecting it could be something about my computer too. But I don't recall it ever crashing in Adagio previous to version 9.
I know opportunistic locking was turned off at first installation of Adagio, and I don't know of that changing.
I am running Windows XP Pro, the server is running Windows Server 2003.

I'm not aware of it happening on another workstation. In fact I tried to run the data integrity check twice yesterday and it crashed when it got to the first batch that experienced a problem both times, but on another workstation this morning I was able to run the check and rebuild quickly and easily without issue.
On mine again today I have crashed/frozen at the same spot in Adagio, when closing the edit batches. And again I have lost some of my data entry.
I have run the chksys and it reports no problem with network configuration - ======= Checking Special System Configurations ====== -- Checking the following Registry entries (Local_Machine): ... KEY: System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters VALUE: EnableOpLocks (=0) ... KEY: System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters VALUE: UseOpportunisticLocking (=0) ... KEY: System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters VALUE: OplocksDisabled (=1)
. . . No unusual System network configuration detected.
Though there are some errors about a version of crystal reports.
I realize this is pointing at my hardware or something different in software configuration, it's just that I'm not having this issue while using other software and I spend more time in Excel, Outlook, and our payroll software, than in Adagio.
Any ideas where there might be a conflict creating the problem while in Adagio?

Barb,
It may be that Adagio is accessing the network much, much more than the other programs. Excel only uses the LAN connection to, perhaps, save or open a file; Outlook never does.
This looks like it could be a network issue: card, cable, router, etc. Pain the neck to troubleshoot, but usually inexpensive to fix.

Hi Barb,
Ralph is right that Adagio will be moving 1000's of bytes more data over your network than any other application you're likely to be using. Almost certainly there is a hardware problem (perhaps a flaky network card). I know that this sounds self serving coming from the software developer, but there is almost nothing that Adagio does as an application that could crash your computer so hard that its clock doesn't even run. Really only device drivers (printers and network drivers) run at a level that could cause that kind of failure.
Can you swap the workstation with another?

I understand how Adagio is more sensitive to network problems, although my payroll program may be similar in usage. I can't switch workstations easily because I am the only one with the payroll software. I tried connecting to a different switch closer to the server but that didn't help.
Today I turned off the Windows indexing, I think it came with a recent Windows update, and I actually managed to run the Data Integrity Check to completion (which I couldn't do last week).

I have replaced my network card, no effect. I've reduced my background tasks and it seems okay as long as I'm not running any other applications at the same time as Adagio. But I have had it hang/freeze again, when I forgot and had other apps running simultaneously. Perhaps you guessed this from my other post where I tried to get creative about restoring my batch. Now I sometimes see a progress bar that it is saving the batch entries when I close a batch. The progress bar froze last time. I can't think of anything that has changed lately, other than Windows updates, that might be causing this now.

HI Barb,
How much memory do you have in this computer? When yousay the computer "froze", could you get the task manager up by pressing ctrl-alt-delete, or had it crashed completely? The task manager will show you what else is running. You can also add "I/O bytes read" and "I/O bytes written" tothe columns in the process display to see if any task is reading or writing to the disk (which might make the task you're woking on seem to have crashed).

I have 1Gb of RAM in a Pentium D 3.4 Ghz computer thats less than 2 years old. I'm running an up to date copy of Windows XP Pro, and Office 2007. The server is Windows Server 2003 - also up to date.
ctrl-alt-delete was not working - it froze completely. Even the clock stops. I've changed the network card and tested connecting directly to the same switch as the server, and it has still frozen. Other workstations go through 3 switches to get to the server, but are working better.
I've reduced background tasks and run System Mechanic to clean up my system. I think this has reduced the frequency but the problem is still there.

Hi Barb,
OK - perhaps it's not the network card, but maybe the motherboard on your computer. Really, there isn't anything that Adagio does that can bring an XP computer to that hard of a stop. It really has to be a low level device driver (perhaps the one that drivers the clock, or manages memory or the disk controller).

Ok - harder to determine, but if it's to do with the motherboard why would it only happen either during Adagio's data integrity check or when closing a batch after editing. I would think that it would freeze at other times, when using other software. I don't want to blame Adagio, I really like your software. Sorry to go on about this, things like this are tough to diagnose. Thank you for your input.
