I'm aware of how Invoices communicates with (Imports Shipments into) Inventory. I also have regular experience with large imports into IC for Shipments generated by Invoices.

I agree with Andrew. Even a very large batch should import quickly, so you need to be looking for an environment issue that is causing the problem.
