Dear Tewfik
This error is outlined in the QL manual, Appendix A...
"FILE OPEN......An attempt to open the dictionary or the associated database failed either because the file did not exist or the path did not exist. Check the path in QL's Options or Link Define."
In QL Options, ensure that the data path and extension are correct for the data you are opening the workbook for. Also make sure that the "Plus" Drive/Path information is accurate.
In QL Link option, select "View Link attributes" to see if the correct information is displayed for this dataset. If the attributes look different than the pathing information in Options, then you should redefine the link(s) and then save the workbook using QL's SAVE command.
If, in both areas, the path information is accurate, then there is another reason for this message.
If your company shares these workbooks and are using different versions of Excel, you will have to accomodate for this. In this case if the file you are trying to open was opened with the Excel2000 version and saved, you will have to Redefine your EXCEL links (not the QL Define link) before you can open this file. (Just as you cannot open an Excel file that was created with a newer version of Excel with an older version - same principal.)
The instances where you would have to redefine the Excel link are:
- when you are changing QL workbooks to different versions of Excel; and
- if you have moved or copied a QL workbook and the linking is not functioning as expected.
HOW TO REDEFINE YOUR EXCEL LINKS IN A QL WORKBOOK
1. Open the workbook using Excel?s FILE | OPEN command.
2. If the worksheet(s) are protected, unprotect them.
3. Select LINKS from Excel?s EDIT menu.
4. If it is not already selected, highlight QUIKLINK.XLA to select it, then click CHANGE SOURCE.
5. Select the correct Quik Link directory and the corresponding QUIKLINK.XLA file. {Under normal circumstances, QL would have been installed in the Directory ?Softrak? (ie C:\Softrak\Quiklnk7)}.
a) If you are currently using QL for Excel 5, select the directory QUIKLNK5 and the file QUIKLINK.XLA.
b) If you are currently using QL for Excel 7, select the directory QUIKLNK7 and the file QUIKLINK.XLA.
c) Click OK when you are finished. Excel returns you to the Links dialog box.
6. Click OK to return to your worksheet.
More information on how to accomodate for the use of two different versions of Excel and/or QL can be found in Chapter 1, under Redefining your Excel Links, or page 1-14.
Hope this helps.
