We want to change the Excel Direct default spreadsheet format as a time saver. Currently it contains filters and row colour formatting, which we always remove, then add footers, etc. (We are using Office 2010 on Windows Server 2012 Standard OS with Terminal Server.) How do we customize this? e.g. Can you tell me where the default template is stored and if there are any caveats to changing the default?

Thanks.

"Always remove"? Really? Always? Even when you use ExcelDirect from the Financial Reporter? GridView?

You can have the ExcelDirect button generate a CSV, which will have no formatting at all when loaded into Excel. Is that what you're looking for? Have you checked how to set the default Template in Excel? (Use Google).

If I knew the specific task you were trying to perform, I would be able to give better advice about how to accomplish this using Adagio.

Hi Anne,

If you want to disable the creation of a formatted Excel table, you can disable it for a particular user. Create \Softrak\System\SSI2XL.INI and use the following lines. The example is for me and the 1 is to disable it. I'm not sure if there is any documentation on what's possible within this file.

;To turn off the creation of Excel 11 tables use
[DisableTableCreate]
;<windows user name>=1
Bob=1

The Toolkit for Adagio has a user preference to control this behavior within that app.

Hi Anne,

Here is the thread that discusses SSI2XL.INI and how it works.

(For those wondering about how to track down information like this, I typed "adagio accounting ssi2xl.ini" into Google. It was the second item listed. We have most of the forums and the technical tips, as well as the change logs in the public space of the web site so that Google can index them for us.)

And a re-read of my reply makes it sound flippant - it wasn't intended to be. There are several ways to control the behaviour of ExcelDirect (SSI2XL.INI is one of them) and I'd like to suggest the best approach.

This document in the Technical Tips area describes how to use SSI2XL.INI (although at the moment it does not mention the ability to suppress the table creation for a user. I will get the document updated.

Thanks Andrew -I'll check out the thread details. We had already changed the Excel default template at the user level to no effect on Excel Direct. As background, the formatting is possibly personal preference, but shaded alternate rows on printed output is a toner cost consideration.

Regards,
Anne

Hi Anne,

Usually there is a "blank and white" option in the printer driver. This might save the toner.

Seems a lot of work to go to to save a couple of $$ in toner a month! smile

Bob, thanks so much for your tip. I just tried it out and am pleased to be back with unformatted Excel.

Best regards,
Anne

Hi Andrew,

In addition to toner considerations, faxing shaded data is a challenge for users. Please let me know when the Tech Tips document for SSI2XL is updated to include additional info.

Thanks,
Anne
