A client wants to mass delete hundreds of old open POs in an effort to clean up their database. There are still items with quantities on PO, which will never be received or invoiced.

There is no way to do that outright, and it is very unwieldy to do it one by one. However, you CAN mass complete POs. What would happen to the on PO quantities in inventory if they were to mass complete the POs without zeroing out the quantities on backorder first? Would it have the same effect as deleting?

Rather than deleting these old PO you want to complete them, so you have the right functin identified.

This will set any quantity on backorder = zero.
