I have a question on charging tax on an item. If a person buys less than 500 kg of a product they are taxed, if they purchase more than 500 kg it is non-taxable. Is there a way to set this up under a category code, where the product will automatically charge or not charge tax based on total quantity purchased/sold?

The easiest way is to use different item codes or manually change the tax status on the item line of an order.

This is based on one invoice that may include multiple products which would add up in total weight. Example:

Products A, B ,C , D on one invoice. They weigh 150 kg's each. This would total 600Kg's and thus tax should not be added. Is there a way of doing this automatically with a default, or can you suggest a way to cheat around the system.

I cannot think of an automatic way. This is a fairly common problem when company provide goods to customers that may or may not be taxable depending on some external condition.

An easy way to assist detecting the condition would be to use an alert and a Ship-to address with a non-taxable code (assuming these are the only items on the order). Otherwise, you'll have to change the items tax status on the individual lines.
