I want to alter the categories on all of my items. If I export them to a CSV file, then alter the fields I need changed, and then import back it would make the process much easier. This way people could contiune to work as I make the changes, and I won't have to open each item.

My question is: Can the import function be used to edit items? or is it simply for adding items?

If it can be used to edit, can I just import the fields that I want changed, or will it blank out fields that there is no import data for?

Hi Nick,

Export Item # and Category to Excel. Make the changes you want. Create an import template importing just those fields and make sure that the box "Add items" is turned off (to make sure that now new items are inadvertantly created. Run an integrity check to make sure there are no problems. Backup before doing the import. Run an integrity check immediately after.

Imports are often used to make wholesale changes to the database. Use an Excel spreadsheet as updating the categories will be easier. Everybody will need to be out of Inventory and OrderEntry when you do the import. It wants exclusive access to the data files.
