We are thinking of upgrading our computers to Windows XP professional. What would be involved in reinstalling Adagio GL & AP? We have two computers connected via peer-to-peer network with only one computer able to run Adagio at one time.

Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda,

From my experience as a consultant, here are some of the considerations in setting up Adagio on a network. Perhaps Adagio Tech support can add some more notes.

1. Make sure your hardware, including network cards, hubs/switches, etc. are solid and reliable. A flaky network card can turn data into scrambled eggs very quickly. Once the network is running well, you can proceed to the next steps.

2. Only one copy of Adagio modules should be installed; the other system will run that copy from the system acting as the "server." If you want more than one user in the same application at the same time, you will need a LanPak. You can add that later, if you wish.

3. Both systems must "see" Adagio on the same logical drive letter, say F: (altough you can use any letter that is unused on both systems).

4. During installation, the Adagio user on each system needs to have administrator rights. You can later reduce them to "power users" if you wish.

5. Create a folder, say C:\Adagio, on the "server." Share it as Adagio. On the "server," open a Command Prompt and type net use F: \\computer_name\adagio persistent:yes. On the other system, map Drive F; to \\computer_name\adagio.

6. Install the Adagio modules on the "server." Use Custom install to make sure they install to Drive F: and make sure the Workstation setup is checked.

7. On the other computer find F:\Softrak\allwkstn and run the only program in that folder. This installs the needed components of Adagio on the system and creates the entries in the registry and menu.

8. On both stations, run F:\softrak\system\chksys.exe. This turns off opporutinistic locking, a Microsoft "feature" that causes continuing grief to all database users.

9. Copy or create your data in a folder on F: (the default is \softrak\data but you can use any folder(s) you can access from both systems. If you are copying the data from another Adagio system with different drive mappings, delete the file ADSPROF.xxx where xxx is your data extension. Adagio will prompt you for the new "tasks" and "currency" paths when you start that data. Make both F:\softrak\system.

10. Set up the Adagio backups in all sets of data. (You can even make the backups to the other computer if you wish, although these are not as good in the long run as a removeable medium like tape, Zip disk or CD-RW.)

11. Enjoy Adagio

Thanks for your post Ralph. There's lots of good stuff there, especially point 5 regarding how to map a local directory to a different drive letter on Windows XP. This is important for Adagio on a peer-peer environment.

I should also add that when doing Adagio installation (either the program or the workstation setup), this should be done while logged into Windows on the workstation as the actual user of the machine, rather than the System Administrator. This was alluded to in point 4, but just to be clear. This is due to how Windows reads files and registry settings based on who logs in.

Well we finally got around to upgrading our computers. I followed the great instructions provided by Ralph and only have the following problem. When I try to open two of my companies I get the following error message - Home Currency (CDN) not found in currency files. The companies that will open have Home Currency set as (DOS). Is there some file I can copy from the old computer that will fix this.

Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda,

In the data directory is a file called ADSPROF. One of it's purposes is to locate the Currency Files; MCCODES.LD4 is one such file. The problem likely is that your ADSPROF file is pointing to a place where currency files indeed exist, but not the same ones you had been using before - with the CDN and/or DOS code created. The error message you are getting indicates the currency code it wants to find is CDN.

The solution is to see if you have the 'currency code' group of files still around. Search for the file name MCCODES.LD4, and it and about a half-dozen other file (MC*.LD4) will exist in the same dirctory. It's a matter of finding the 'old' ones, and copying them to the \softrak\system directory - where you likely set the path when first setting up the data.

Hope this isn't too confusing...

I deleted the ADSPROF.xxx file and set the new currency path. Thats when I got the error message. I went into a company that didn't get the error message and created the CDN currency. After that I was able to open the two companies with the CDN home currency.

Thanks for your reply, Brenda
