We were wondering what is the difference between the inventory external tables used with Gridview 9.3B (190802) with links on the Item # or if there are guidelines on the number of records that you can link with calculated formulas?

When we use the command GETEXTERNALDATA("@N93AITM".....) we get many more errors when we link to the item master file than if we link to the @N93AITM1GV" using basically the same formula (except for the table link). The Gridview table 1GV seems to have the same fields as the Item master.

But if we do a GETLINKEDVALUE on the loaded view of the Item Master file (within the workspace), we get no errors on the linked Item fields. The downside is that we need a second table which is not normally an issue.

We had to recreate a view that was previously using a very old custom composite table that Michael created and our new view creation worked for several months but has started to fail on many of the previously working GETEXTERNALDATA formulas. And data integrity reports the data is clean. All module versions are 9.3.

We get the same errors when we tested in 64 Bit as with Regular Gridview, but prefer to run the program in 64 bit to get maximum search speed.

Our requirement has to create a fairly large view with 350 fields including calculated fields to feed an external program.

Are there limits on the number of records that we can link to using the GETEXTERNALDATA? Are there guidelines for using GETLINKEDVALUE versus GETEXTERNALDATA? In past we have been quick to use the GETEXTERNALDATA, but this recent situation is making us rethink our design options for Gridview.

Hi Brian,

It would be helpful if you posted the actual GETEXTERNALDATA() formula your View is using rather than just a summary. Even better if you use the (code) tags to make it monospaced.

GETEXTERNALDATA() should return a single record from the target table, and the requested field from that table. It does not return multiple records.

There is no limit that I know of any specific number of tables that can be linked together.
