I just learned something I want to share.

Did anyone besides me ever wonder why an item can have exactly one Alternate Item (presumably a replacement item if the item has been discontinued), and yet under Item Inquiry there is a tab called Alternate Items, with a grid. I never understood why you would need a grid to list no more than one item.

Well, a client showed me that the grid displays all items that have this item listed as its replacement item. Now the tab and grid make more sense.

It got me thinking, why would someone want to know this?

I’ve know about this for years. I’m surprised it’s not more we’ll know. Would make a good tip or trick at a future AOC.

Example I alway use is the Truck parts industry. This morning a specific gear comes down the production line. At the end of the production line the part is stamped with an Fuller part number. Over lunch that is changed to a Rockwell part number so that the next fully finished gear has a different manufacturer part number. The carries on through all 12 major truck part manufactures.

Using Alternative Items I can create a cross reference to all 12.
