Ledger 9.2A (150903)

It seems that something funny has happened with 2016.
If I go into a GL company with a fiscal year-end sometime earlier in 2015 (or earlier), and I start the company with a date in 2016, the system responds: Date is not valid... Fiscal periods, defaulted to 12...
Now, if I go in with a January date in 2016, the system does not default to Period 12.

This always worked in the past. And, if I go into a company with a date of 2015 this does work.

One of my clients just called to tell me what is happening on his computer, and I am able to duplicate this on my computer as well - both on sample data and client data.

This is noticeable for example when we click on Reports > Trial Balance.
Compare what happens when you start the company with a date in 2015 vs. 2016.

Hi Sam,

What is the Current Fiscal Calendar for this company? Is the Next Year open?

This message appears when the sign-on date is not in the Current fiscal calendar, or the Next Year calendar if that is open. I suspect that for the company data you are opening, there is no fiscal calendar period related to your sign-on date.

When I log into sample data with today's date, I get that message you see, and creating a new batch entry defaults the period to 12. For me, the period default is coming from the sign-on month, irrespective of the year. Is this the source of the question?

We'd need more information about the company fiscal calendar, and where you were expecting a period 12 default that wasn't provided, in order to provide a more specific answer.

Sample Company
"Next Year" is not open
Fiscal Year: Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2008
Open the company with a date: 12/31/2015 (or earlier)
Next, select Reports > Trial Balance
Note the Fiscal Period that is defaulted (It is: 2008 - 12)

Repeat the above, with a sigh-on date of 01/01/2016 (or later)
Select Reports > Trial Balance
Note the Fiscal Period that is defaulted (It is: 2008 - 1)

Tried this with client data with a fiscal year-end of Oct 2014 and "Next Year" is open - same results.

Hi Samuel,

Ok, so by 'the system does not default to Period 12', you mean specifically the default period for the Trial Balance report (and presumably the Detail Listing report as well), as opposed to fiscal period selection everywhere in Ledger.

I can duplicate that when signing into Ledger with a date after the latest fiscal calendar, the default period for the Trial Balance report, and the default ending period for the Detail Listing report, comes from the month of the sign-on date. 2016 has nothing to do with the scenario - you tested the 2015 sign-on in December (period 12) so that doesn't demonstrate the issue. Try signing into sample data with Nov 30 2015, or Apr 30 2010 to see examples of the difference.

I believe your expectation is that the default period for the Trial Balance should have been period 12 of the last fiscal year. I can write this up for R&D. However, in 'real world' scenarios, how often would someone be signing into Ledger data with a date after the last open fiscal year? If someone has a fiscal year end of Dec 31, 2015, wouldn't they have already opened the 2016 fiscal year in Ledger for processing? It's certainly best practices to do so.

OK, it appears that you are correct.
I logged into Sample Company as 5/31/2015, 8/31/2015, 9/30/2015 and the behaviour is as you documented here.
In each case, if I create a new GL batch, the period defaults to 12 (as expected).
it is just the various reports that follow the month that I signed in as.

This being the case, I would not bother to make any suggestions to R&D.
