I have a client that is interested in using a Mac fileserver as a lot of their other (non accounting) computers are Macs. Has anyone come be a similar setup, any pitfalls and any recommendations?

Thanks.

What we have offered MAC prospects is to set them up with a Windows Terminal Server that their MAC workstations can access using RDP.

There is windows emulation software available for MAC workstations but I've never tried it on a MAC server. Off the top of my head I don't know that I would recommend this solution unless someone out their has extensive experience running Adagio in the environment you propose.

In theory, there shouldn't be a problem, since Adagio runs happily from a Linux Server. Having said that, this isn't a supported environment, so you'd be on your own if there are any problems.

Being unfamiliar with Mac or Linux I’ve been told Mac Server is a Unix server and so should work similarly. The client’s network tech would like to know what protocol does Adagio require for a Linux server.

There really isn't any special setup required for Linux. Likley you and the hardware tech will need to invent this wheel. You will want to make sure that all of Adagio functions are fully tested before your client goes live (in order to make sure that everything holds together). Let us know how you make out.

Here's what I do have for installing Adagio on a Linux server;

To install Adagio on a Linux server start from a workstation in the normal manner except;

you must use Windows Run to launch the setup.exe using a parameter /linux

Alternatively prior to installing each module you must open a command prompt and type the following command at x:\softrak

chmod -R +w *

Then you could run the install by double clicking on it.

If installing multiple modules leave the command prompt open (minimized). That way you can go back to it for each module and press F3 to repeat the last command (rather than typing it out each time).

Your clients network tech should read this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549

It deals with sharing files that are on the Mac with Windows Workstations.

We setup a new MacBook accessible from our Windows Network following the instructions from the above URL ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549 ). We then install a full copy AR9.0 and were able to access the sample data without any problems.

Before going into production I would do more testing with multiple users to be safe.

Be sure to grant all users RW shared access to the appropriate folders.

In our case we created an Adagio Group with RW access to the Adagio shared folder. We used identical User Name and Passwords on the Mac as used in our Windows environment.

From the Windows Workstation we mapped a drive to the Adagio Mac share using the IP address and then intalled to this drive.
