hello there,

On our system, whenever anyone uses a module, say Inventory control for a certain data path and set, all subsequent users automatically default to that path and set when they log in to that module. We are currently running a test data set which is identical to our live one. We don't want subsequent logins to default to the test data set. Is there some way we can accomplish this?

As a corollary to this question, when we go into user and groups in the test data set it has all the same uses/group rights as our live set. Can I be assured that If I make changes to the User and Group settings while in the test data that it will not affect the live user settings?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike,

The behaviour of everyone sharing the same "Most recently accessed" item is being changed in the recent series of Upgrades. Until that time, make sure that you have changed the desktop colour to something distinctive inhe "test" data set. That will prevent (hopefully) someone doing live data entry into the test database.

User group security is stored by company. You can change it in the test company without worry.

I would also suggest that you change the company name in the test company. This will not prevent some one from entering data in the test company, but the audit report will show you it was in the test company.
You could also set up a test user and test group. Then give that user/group the only rights to the test company.

Hello Mike:

And another option is to have separate desktop icons for each of the 2 datasets. Assume:
-Live data = F:\Data\Live with extension DAT
-Test data = F:\Data\Test with extension TST

Therefore edit the properties of the Adagio icons to refer to the live data. For instance, the command line for the AP icon would look like this:
F:\Softrak\APWIN\APWIN.exe /dF:\Data\Live /eDAT

The first part would be different on your computer - it will already be defined correctly on your desktop.

Then copy that icon, give it a different name and change the Command line to point to the Test data.
F:\Softrak\APWIN\APWIN.exe /dF:\Data\Test /eTST

By doing this, you are guaranteed to be opening the correct dataset, though it does take some time if you have lots of users and lots of modules.

I will probably use new groups.

Thanks Bruce,

I wasn't aware of the command line options.
