Our database was set up with a 4 digit item number. Is there a way to go to 5 digits or more?

In the Company Profile it is not letting me alter the item number format.

The item number format is one thing that the program will not allow you to change after it is set up.

It is possible, but not simple, to export the entire inventory to Excel, create a new database with the new number format, revise the numbers in Excel and then import into the new database.

Hi Ralph,

I don't think Nick would want to do that as he would lose all his historical information.

I'm not sure, but it's possible that AIM's Item Number change is capable of changing the format. Another partner has developed a process to change the format across all the necessary files. (Nick - you have to change all the instances of item numbers in all historical, order entry, sales analysis and purchase order files. It's a big job.)

I'll contact the Partner I think has done this and see if my memory is correct.

I believe that if your data base was define with a 4 character item code, single segment, it may be possible to "tweak" the ICGLOB file to make it a 2 segment item code with LLLL-L as the format.

All original item numbers would have a "space" as the 5th character, for new items you could add the 5th trailing character.

The finder behaviour would change for those old items that had less than 4 characters. In the old data if you typed 14 and enter in a finder box it would take you to the correct item #. If you made the change above typing 14 would bring up 1400. So to bring up 14 you would now need to type space space 14.

If you have products interfaced to IC other than OE and AP, such as Sales Analysis or Purchase Orders then the above may not work or at least some additional "tweaking" would be needed.

Hi Nick

In the ACCPAC Plus days, there was an add-on that could do what you want, called Item Format Change. It will still work with Adagio data, but not perfectly.

I have a copy of it. If you want to give it a try on test data, contact me, and I'll have you send me some data to try out.

Hi Steve (and Nick),

If Nick has upgraded to IC 8.0B then the history file will not be converted by the ACCPAC Plus utility.

Sorry.

Hi Andrew

That's why I said "not perfectly". I also know it won't convert the OE History files. But maybe Nick can live with this.
