Does GridView 8.0B have higher memory requirements that 8.0A?

After upgrading a client's networked system and copying reports from my system to the client system, I get the following:

On two Windows 98 system withs 128 mb RAM, Open Workspace does not work at all (selecting File / Open Workspace produces no result at all.)

On a Windows XP (home - yuck) notebook, with 128 mb RAM, attempting to open the workspace appears to work but produces the error "...not a valid workspace file."

Atempting to open the individual reports produces a "parameter error" message on all systems.

The reports contain several calculated columns as well as two queries for start and end dates. They were created in exactly the same version (NFR) on my system, where they work nicely against a copy of the same data. However, my system has more memory.

(The systems at the client are about to be upgraded; I just want to make sure that will solve the problem.)

Can you create a simplt View/Workspace on any of the machines, save, and then use File/Open to open them up?

There are some issues with WIN98 machines with both GridView and the Financial Reporters and dialogue used to open files/workspaces. Some of these will be addressed in the next release but are not guarenteed on Win 98 machines.

See the following for Win 98 compatibility:

Hi Ralph:

What operating system do you use yourself?

One of my computers is WIN98 and I found that the "Open Workspace" option does nothing on that computer. But the same version of GV (8.0B NFR) works properly on my XP computer.

I also found two other buttons/options that wouldn't do anything under WIN98 (ie. the "single folder" button on the GV login screen).

Softrak Technical Support confirmed that the operating system is the most likely cause.

I don't know about the other errors but at least one problem will disappear when your client upgrades their PC's.

Hi Ralph Allan,

I'm pretty sure that you're seeing a Win 98 issue. However, GridView likes lots of RAM, and I'd suggest more that 128MBytes for XP anyway (even Home).

BTW - why the "yuck" for home? I never experienced any problems with it, and it certainly doesn't share the problems that Windows ME had compares to 98 SE.

Thanks for confirming my throught that both the Win 98 operating system and the lack of RAM are culprits.

The client's new system will be 256 mb RAM, at least, and use XP Pro, which is the system on the machine I used to create the reports. That should eliminate the issue.

Andrew: "Yuck" overstates my feelings a bit, but I have found networking problems harder to resolve with XP Home than with Pro (an opinion shared by several network "gurus" around here). On stand-alone systems, however, it makes no difference that I have seen, and I have clients running Adagio successfully on both versions.

I share Ralph's sentiments on XP Home. It is not designed to run business class applications. It is an OK machine for stand alone use. More often than not you will run into security issues when using XP Home on a network. The cost of troubleshooting these problems exceeds the cost of buying XP Pro in the first place (penny wise pound foolish)
