Is it possible to continue posting information for the year that is being closed while issuing checks & generating invoices for the new year?

Hello John,

Yes. Just archive the resulting general ledger batches for the new year, and the retrieve and post them once you have closed the current year. You should not need to keep your general ledger open for more than a couple of weeks into your new year. It is always possible to post transactions to the prior year, should that be necessary.

I just closed the year and started a new year. When I go to open up last year's GL database, I get the following error message:

The "batch control" file was not found. Incomplete dataset, unable to start program.

Is there something that I can do to correct this problem?

I'm concerned that there may be more files missing than just the batch control file.

Did you do a backup prior to moving or deleting any files out of last year's database? It might be a good idea to make a new backup of what you've got. Then restore the previous backup (the one from before any files were moved or deleted) and make sure that you can still access the GL from the restored backup.
