A weird situation. Client data on laptop in office when we go to set their invoice (or picking slip or credit note) settings in A/R Co. Profile, O/E Co. Profile, Customer Record and O/E Workstation option settings we set a spec and all good.

That same data if we attempt to do the same thing on a network environment the settings don't hold. We can pick out the spec in question and enter it in one of the fields as mentioned above. As soon as we go back in to look at the setting it is blank.

So the issue is everytime we go to print an invoice for example we continually have to pick out the spec in question as opposed to it automatically being there but it isn't there since the setting is not working.

In both environments (laptop and network) same versions and service pack level are the same.

Should I do a reinstall of the programs and then a workstation install? or is there some setting behind the scenes that is not getting updated obviously.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott,

The default spec is set in File / Workstation Options, not the company profile. The Profile has specs for defaults when creating new customers.

Thanks support. I have looked at that. I must be missing something obvious. If I set the spec setting in the Workstation Options (which holds) when I go to print an invoice and the setting is "use selected specification" the spec field is blank even though this is set in workstation options.

Since the settings won't hold in the customer record I can't use the "Current customer specification" option since the setting doesn't hold in the first place.

I have attempted to use the setting 'document specification" setting and that seems to work.

But not the other two options for whatever reason.

Thanks Scott.

What is the File name for the specification you are attempting to set as the default? More than 8 characters, including the OE$ prefix? When spec names are longer than 8 characters, they get translated to a short name convention like OE$INV~1.dat by Windows. Because there are only 8 characters reserved for spec names on the customer record, company profile, etc. It may be that the short name conversion is not doing it exactly the same and thus when loaded, it is not finding it and thus showing blank instead.

Thanks Support. I think you have found it! the spec in question is 10 characters (not including the extension) so assuming that is the culprit.

When I am out on site again will rename the spec and test and get back to you to be absolutely sure. Never would have thought of that one.

Thanks again.

Scott:

The root of the problem is 2 things:
(1) Adagio tables generally only have room for an 8-character filename so they have to use the operating system's shortname feature for longer names (where AP$Hancock.ADB" becomes "AP$HAN~1.ADB").
(2) The server's operating system has to have the shortname feature turned on (it's often called "8.3 file naming").

In the 1990's the 8.3 file naming feature was always activated. But that is no longer the case.

You can tell whether it's activated by going to the command prompt and using "DIR /X" in a folder where there are longer filenames. If it doesn't display a 8.3 shortname in the format "XXXXX~1", then those filenames don't have a true 8.3 name. That is likely because the feature isn't activated (that's an IT task) or, less likely, the feature is active now but the files were created earlier and therefore didn't acquire their 8.3 names.

Thanks Bruce for the information. Greatly appreciated. Another thing I learned today (well that's nothing new).

I will check this the next time I am out.

I have been going nutso trying to figure out why the settings work on my laptop but not on site. Well between you and Support now I know.

Thanks again.
