OK, so I'm getting unrecoverable errors in the GL and having to restore data from backup and recreate the work about once every 2 months... pretty unsatisfactory.

I thought maybe my computer was pooched, but the entire accounting office recently got all new machines and it just happened again.

My IT guy suggested that maybe the software should be reinstalled... I've been here for 5 years and we've only ever done the updates, never a reinstallation... is there any chance the software is becoming corrupted?

Hi Hugh

The answer is yes, there is a chance for anything to be causing the problem. Is it likely - no.

But re-installing Ledger from scratch is not a major operation if you want to give it a try. It's the kind of thing I would do for my clients in under an hour (more like 20 minutes depending on the performance of the system).

I really think this is a discussion better done between your consultant and you rather than on the forum. For one thing, we don't know what other modules you are using, and how many different Ledgers you are running.

out of balance. in yesterday's case it was an entry that was to AP and Inventory. AP got it's half but Inventory didn't so the Trial balance... didn't.

In an effort to track down what might be causing the problem, perhaps you could turn on the automatic backup prior to posting and then print (or preview) a Summary Trial Balance after each post. When you see the problem occur, please send us the backup made prior to posting.

I think it's very unlikely re-installing Ledger will change what's happening. Seems more likely to be an intermittent failure at a specific workstation, or perhaps this is triggered by a very specific sequence of steps. Checking the application log will help us track it down.

with regard to it being workstation specific, the problem has been caused in the past by Journal Entry postings entirely intra GL and on my computer. I was suspect of my computer as it was older. then the entire accounting office got new gear and then yesterday's error was an AP module posting to the GL from a different workstation... so no consistency there.

I'll try the protocol you suggest and see what it looks like next time it happens...

When you say the accounting department got new gear, did that include a new server and switches? Any other older equipment still connected to the network?

moved to a NAS device, but yes it's new. however there is other non-accounting traffic on the network as well so that's our other thought as to the problem... maybe it's a communication issue.
