A client finds this pretty normal-sounding process cumbersome.

1) They receive merchandise at the dock, not knowing where they are going to store it. It gets received into a catch-all location.

2) When they physically move the merchandise to a spot in the warehouse, they do a stock transfer out of the catch-all location and into the proper location.

3) They then exit the stock transfer function and use the Edit | Picking sequence function to enter the picking sequence for that item/location, so the system knows where the merchandise is stored.

Shouldn't there be a way to indicate the picking sequence at the same time they are doing the stock transfer?

Hi Steve,

I have written up your suggestion for R&D. It sounds like you would like to see Edit Picking Sequences function incorporated into the Stock Transfer function, for the Item/Location records.

I presume that in this scenario, the particular Item/Location combination does not exist at the time of doing the stock transfer, which is why it has to later be edited in order to change the pick sequence to the desired value. Is that correct?

Are you looking to be able to change the pick sequence even if the Item/Location record has been previously set up, or only for brand new transfers to a location that the item has never yet been stocked at?

If the Stock Transfer was for a different Item Number rather than just a different Location, would you still want to see the Edit Pick Sequence feature?

How does your client receive stock, through IC or PurchaseOrders? Would you expect to be able to set the Pick Sequence for the initial receipt of goods if it is being received to a location that it had never been stocked at before?

To answer your questions in the order asked...

The item/location combination already exists because any item may be stored in any location. Often, the item/location combination for the location has been previously used, but the picking sequence was different (and the stock has long ago been sold).

I'm looking to edit the picking sequence whether the item/location has been previously set up or not.

For purposes of this topic, I don't care whether the edit is available if the Stock Transfer is between different items. If someone wants to chime in to express their opinion, that would be good.

The client receives stock through PurchaseOrders. I don't expect to be able to set the picking sequence for the initial receipt. I am only concerned about stock transfers. Stock transfers is the function that records the movement of inventory, and it would be logical to be able to record the picking sequence during the function.

Thanks for the updates Steve. I'll add them to the request.

FYI, when any item can be stored at any location, and no transaction has yet been posted for an item to a specific location, that record may not yet been created in the ICILOC file, if it hasn't been made active in Edit Item or Edit Location. In this case, it is only when the first transaction is posted that the record gets created. I have to ask because it could be possible to transfer stock to a location it has never been in before. But that scenario isn't in your situation.
