One function displays 'Current' documents and the other function displays 'Historical' documents. They are separate data files. Though Day End Processing does make a copy of completed current documents to history, this does not guarantee that history will contain every current document - it does not.
Historical orders don't display details - amounts tend to be zero. Historical invoices and credit notes display better.
Display current orders is useful for looking at the document without being prompted to save changes. This prevents the Printed status of the order from getting reset.
For your clients who get confused, you can disable the function via Security Groups and thus it would no longer be available for selection.
