I am using the Time and Billings module. Each month I run the Control Type Billing Summary report that gives me MTD and YTD fees. There are two pieces of information I need but cannot find a report to produce. a) I would like to print this report with the detail of what files make up these fees. b) I would like the associated costs. I have entered the cost for each of our staff but this costs is not reflected on a report. I have inherited this system with little training. It would be good to hear from others using Time and Billings on how this info is generated.

Hi Sandra

Do you own Adagio GridView? That's what I use to generate Time and Billing reports such as the one you are requesting for my clients. GridView is a customer report writer, so there is a lot of flexibility in the reports you can create, but it has a learning curve (not too steep though).

Hi Steve,

Thank you so much for responding to my email. The company I am working with have used Adagio for a number of years but have not done much with actual month end reporting. I am trying to create some actual management reports such as the one I described. No we do not have Grid View but we do have Crystal Reports. Have you used Crystal Reports? If so, what one do you prefer? What one has a steeper learning curve?
Thanks again,
Sandra

Hi Sandra

Crystal Reports will probably work, although I have not used it for TB reports. The learning curve for Crystal is much steeper, and it takes a lot longer to actually design a report using Crystal than GridView (but the end result is prettier). GridView also has the advantage of being able to directly export to Excel, while Crystal is better if printing to PDF.

Steve,

Currently I can only print a summary report of fees by control type. Are you able to generate a detailed report of this information with gridview? Also, do you print a report of associated costs?

Hi Sandra,

If you would like detailed billing (or unbilled work in progress) information, GridView can access the 'Work in Progress' data file in order to report on any of unbilled time or expenses, or billed time or expenses. It is straight-forward to sort or select records by any of the stored information in the Work in Progress file, such as customer, file, file type, staff, date, etc.

A few built-in management reports such as the Time & Disbursement Ledger, Billing Memo or Aged Work in Progress reports already read and report from this file. For example, the Aged Work In Progress allows sorting and selecting by the Account Set.

Summary reports in Time&Billing read statistical values such as MTD or YTD amounts that are stored directly on the respective records (docket, staff, file type, etc) and as such there is no drill-down to details for these reports.

I agree with Steve that the learning curve for GridView is much less than Crystal Reports, but it depends on whether presentation-quality is required for your reports, or whether just getting at the information with greater speed is the most important facet.
