I have been trying to locate a person to handle our accounting needs. We are a speciality contractor that does new commercial construction and we use adagio A/R, A//P, G/L, and Invoicing. Someone sold me on Adagio and now I cannot find anyone who has any experience using the software. I have tried classifieds and I get a lot of Quickbook users and they freak out when they try to use Adagio. I have resorted to using AccountTemps and they, as well, have not found anyone who knows the software.

So, here I am asking Adagio users for some help. The question I have is what software experience should a person have so they will be able to use Adagio effectively. I know Qucikbooks is out of the question, what software is comparable from an experience standpoint?

Sincerely,

A Business Owner In Need
Thank you.

It depends on the level of person. Are you talking about clerical (mostly data entry such as payables or invoicing), bookkeeping (GL duties including bank rec), or controller (probably a CPA)?

It would be best if the candidate is familiar with any accounting software package that is modular (sold in modules) and batch-oriented (where data entering is separate from posting). Those are higher level packages because they expect that there is a separation of duties and thus more than one person in the accounting department.

However, it truly doesn't matter what software package the candidate is familiar with if: 1) they have a positive attitude about learning, and 2) their accounting skills are adequate (except for the clerical position where it's less important). Anyone with those two attributes will love Adagio; it's intuitive (to an accountant), has a good combination of power and ease of use, and learning it is not a step backwards in anyone's career path. I have done a lot of training of new staff at my clients and these are the only two important indicators for success.

Steve

When I started my position a few years ago (Controller for smallish non-profit) I had no Adagio experience but I had experience with some batch accounting using Great Plains, though very little. My new boss did not know accounting much less software and this was a new accounting program for them. I taught myself in no time and was able to implement other modules that were not in use. I would suggest based on the experience with my clerical staff that this is an aptitude thing. There is no way that my clerks would have been able to run the software without training. So, you need to find someone who is keen with all types of software and batch accounting. Playing in the sample data makes hands-on learning easy.
