Just tried installing the upgrade Adagio Ledger 8.0A. Almost made it!

Got an error message F:\SOFTRAK\ALWIN\StandardRP\Alaccgrp_v1.rpt could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory. Access is denied.

1) Disk is not full
2) I have access to everything
However,
3) "F:" drive is a Netware 3.2 Volume and long file name is NOT enabled and both the directory name and the file name in the error message have more than 8 characters. How come ?

It looks like I got a partial install which makes me really really nervous. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Hi Sandra,

What happens if you try to create a new folder (using Windows Explorer) that has 9 or more characters? What happens if you try to save a file (say a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet) with a file name of 9 or more characters? My guess is that you will get some sort of error message indicating that this is an invalid folder or file name.

Depending of the version of Windows and your network, it may be set up to disallow folders or file names with more than 8 characters. It may be that you are using an old version of Windows (ie 95 or maybe even 98) or an old version of Novell network or Client. Should either of these turn out to be the case, you'll need to talk to your I.T. person in order to address this. The majority of new software applications now assume that you are allowed to use long file name (or names with spaces). Certainly Windows NT/2000/XP allows this, as does Windows 98 usually.

My original point #3 is that we do NOT have our drive set up to accept long file names. I do not need to test this. We are using this drive for ACCPAC+ G/L 6.5 which is a DOS product, that is, 8.3 file format.

I need to get a fix for this; we are using adagio primarily as an alternative front end to our ACCPAC data and for the financial report writer. Can this new release work without long file names and what can I expect in future - this came as a complete surprise and I can find nothing in any of the documentation. Please advise - I seem to have a partial install of the upgrade.

Hello Sandra,

Your use of Novell 3.12 raised the possibility that you have not turned on support for Long File Names under that 8 year old operating system . Novell is be refusing to create files (or directories) with longer names.

For instructions about enabling long file names under Novell 3.12, click here.

P.S. You might want to consider moving to a slightly more current server environment.

P.P.S. What functions are you still using in ACCPAC Plus?
