I have the above option set to Manual, which according to Help lets you "enter new base prices while receipting the inventory".

However, I couldn't get a prompt asking me for a new base price to appear when I did a test receipt. What else do I have to do? I tried changing the item pricing to markup instead of discount but it didn't have any effect.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

The Markup Factor on the IC item has to be something other than 1.00 in order for the manual Base Price pop-up to appear. I guess this is to ensure that the base price didn't changed by accident, as an expectation that people who want to markup item prices over cost will set a new markup value other than 1 (the default value when items are created) for the desired items.

What do you think? Is this a reasonable way to prevent particular IC items from getting changed indiscriminately, by having a markup factor of 1.00 skip the base price update? Or do you see people wanting the base price to be precisely the PO unit cost? I'd be interested to know what your experience lends to how this should best work, if different than the above.

Hi Softrak

I think it's a pretty stupid way of implementing this function. The option is called "Update base price on entry", not "Markup base price from cost on entry". The pop-up box should always appear if Manual is selected.

If the pricing method for an item is "markup", as you suggested the user might want to change the base price to exactly equal the cost, or do the arithmetic off-line and enter a new price.

If the pricing method is "discount", the user doesn't even have to see the markup factor, because it doesn't apply, they should just be able to enter a new price.

Thanks for letting me know how it currently works, I never would have guessed.

Thanks for your thoughts Steve. Now that Softrak has more control over the PO program, we can more easily make changes such as this in future releases. I agree that using the Markup Factor is best used when Updating Price Lists from Inventory, rather than receiving POs.

Since there currently is an 'Auto' choice for the 'Update base price on entry' option, how would you see base prices being 'automatically' updated by receiving a PO? Using the Markup Factor as it currently does, or a different way? An 'Auto' setting suggests that no pop-up screen appears at all.

Note that the Markup pricing over cost that can be defined on a master IC item or alternate price list item are calculated on the fly based on the 5 levels (A-E customer levels or qty ordered in OE), rather than using the Base price. So I don't believe PO should be updating the base price from the Markup Pricing values - as there are up to 5 possible choices to use. But using the Markup/Discount setting as a way to skip updating the base price from PO sounds interesting.

I suspect that changes to this option won't be possible in the next upgrade to PO, but it sounds like a good idea for a future upgrade.
